San Felipe Fort

Built by the Spaniards in the 16th century on the waterfront to fend off pirates. The 2000 square meter fort is the oldest standing edifice in Puerto Plata and the only remnant of the colonial time architecture. It overlooks the statue of General Gregorio Luperon, hero of the war that restored the rule of the country to the Dominicans from the Spanish.

Puerto Plata Lighthouse

Built in 1879 it was restored in 2002 with a grant from the World Monuments Fund that valued this 24.4 meter high rare cast iron tower, only one of very few still standing in the Americas.

Festivals

Puerto Plata has two major festivals each year, the Cultural festival, which is held during the third week of June and the Merengue Festival the first week of October. Both festivals are worth attending if you happen to be there while it is being celebrated. The Cultural Festival offers an insight into the colorful Dominican culture with folk music, traditional African tribal dances, salsa and merengue and many crafts exhibits by local artists.

The biggest celebration the Merengue Festival. The Malecón (the seaside boulevard which stretches three miles along the Atlantic coast) is closed and vendors set up booths on both sides of the street selling a variety of homemade goods to eat, drink or wear. A huge stage is erected at one end of the Malecón for concerts by famous merengue singers. The festival is a good representation of the Dominican culture and passion for the merengue.

Dominican Jazz Festival is an international Jazz festival held in October on the weekend of the Columbus holiday in Santiago, Playa Dorada and Sosúa. For more information visit www.drjazzfestival.com
